Undercurrents QCA Graduates exhibition 2016

Undercurrents is the aptly titled graduate exhibition of QCA, Griffith University Studio Art and Photo Media undergraduate and Honours students.  The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines an undercurrent as “a flow of water that moves below the surface of the ocean or a river,” or “a hidden feeling or tendency that is usually different from the one that is easy to see or understand.” Conventional ways of understanding is habit forming, and therefore limited. Here is the work of seventeen of Australia’s newest emerging artists, and it is anything but conventional.

The aim of this exhibition is clear: to disrupt the conventional ways in which we experience the world in order to open up a more inclusive dialogue about the way the world is. Gilles Deleuze wrote in A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia, “a concept is a brick. It can be used to build a courthouse of reason. Or it can be thrown through the window.” The concepts here range from issues of identity, technological advancement, equity and the environment, but they are united by their criticality and by the way they all pull the audience towards re-examining the ways in which we see the world, and to affect change.

Featuring emerging artists: Alyson Baker, Jenna Baker, Adam Bradford, Raqchela Corbu-Miles, Lowana-Skye Davies, Alexandra Gonzalez-Mendoza, Jonathan James Grace, Amber Louise Middleton, Rachel Hardy, Olivia Ivy-May Heath, Samantha Manchee, Aliah Murillo, Emmy Peterson, Kingston Seinafo Feala and Lauren Young.

QCA Studio conveners: Dr Laini Burton and Dr Heather Faulkner
