Diary of a Wombat

The Arts Centre Gold Coast presents Diary of a Wombat

Based on the book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley

Devised by Monkey Baa Theatre Company

What exactly do Wombats do all day?

Once there was a wombat, round, brown and stroppy, who taught humans to be her servants and leave out rolled oats in homage?

She ripped up doormats, the washing; shoes left outside, the mop; chewed holes in doors and gnawed at window frame.

Millions of young people around the world have adored the multi award-winning picture book, Diary of a Wombat. Now finally this iconic work by Australian Children’s Laureate (2014/15), Jackie French and Bruce Whatley comes to the stage.

Meet Mothball, the naughtiest wombat in Australia. Bored with her daily routine, Mothball goes in search of shelter and food, creating chaos in the lives of the humans around her.

Doormats, bins and washing lines are no match for this mischievous marsupial. Between a packed schedule of scratching, sleeping and eating Mothball discovers that with a bit of persistence, humans are quite easily trained!

Monkey Baa Director, Eva Di Cesare and a team of revered artists including Puppetry and Movement Director, Alice Osborne (War Horse 2012/13), Designer Imogen Ross (Hitler’s Daughter) and accomplished composer/cellist, Oonagh Sherrard use the magic of puppetry and live music to bring this delightful story for ages 3+ to the stage.

NB: Children under 3 years of age are free on the knee of a parent or caregiver. Children 3 years and over must have a ticketed seat.

Opening night is Monday 11 September at 6pm. We know a weeknight can be tricky, so here are our top six ways to make it happen!

  1. Come straight from work / school / kindy / ballet / karate – we’ll be open!
  2. Bath early or skip the bath altogether. (It’s early spring. NO ONE WILL KNOW.)
  3. Feed the kids here – we’ll have child-friendly meals available from 4.30pm
  4. Watch the kids’ faces light up as they enjoy the show from 6pm – 6.45pm, you’ll be out of here by 7pm.
  5. Pre-pack the kids’ PJs – if they fall asleep on the way home, just pop them into bed (bonus!)
  6. Have a glass of wine. You took your kids to the THEATRE on a WEEKNIGHT!
